How to make your own Bug Out Bag (BOB) for emergency preparation

Bug out bags may prove handy especially in times of emergencies when the only option is to pack your belongings and evacuate the area. An article from Survival Cache will walk you through the process of creating your own bug out bag and the essential items it must include. For those not familiar with the term, a bug out bag is a pre-prepared survival kit that will help you sustain yourself in times of emergencies such as natural calamities and disasters. A typical bug out bag is designed to sustain its user for at least 72 hours, hence, its other name the 72-hour bag.

What you need to include in your personal bug out bag

1. Water – Water is obviously the most important item in your bug out bag. It is every survivalist’s main concern and for good reason. Water is a basic survival need. Humans require at least a liter of water a day to survive, so bringing three liters will sustain you for about 3 days. Bringing a water purification system is also crucial. We recommend purchasing these items at Health Ranger Store.

2. Food – It is always wise to stock up on foods that are ready to eat such as backpack meals and energy bars. These foods sustain you for longer periods of time due to their prolonged shelf life.

3. Clothing – Your bug out bag should contain clothing that you would normally wear on a weekend trip. This should include a sturdy pair of boots, a pair of long pants, a jacket and two shirts as well as two pairs of socks, warm long underwear, and a hat.

4. Shelter – You never know where you will be during emergencies. Typically, disasters and catastrophes call for evacuation. Keeping a mobile shelter will prove to be essential, as these would provide both warmth and protection against the harsh weather. Tents, bed rolls, or sleeping bags should be non-negotiable essentials.

5. First aid kit – A first aid kit is every survivalist’s health insurance in the wild. Pre-packaged first aid kits are available everywhere. If you opt to build your own, make sure you include adhesive bandages of different sizes and gauze dressing, suture kits, alcohol pads, and lip balm.

6. Basic gear – Basic gear refers to a lot of items necessary for survival.

A. Rain gear – A rain gear will help you stay dry in the event of an emergency such as storm evacuation.

B. Fire gear – Another survival essential, it is important to include items that will help you build fire for warmth and light.

C. Light – Bring at least 2 dependable flashlights and a set of batteries for back up.

D. Knife – Whether it be foldable or fixed, knives will come in handy in any given emergency. Health Ranger Store offers a variety of survival knives that are durable and light-weight.

7. Weapons – Emergencies can require the need for a weapon. This should be used solely for protection purposes.
