Ukrainian authorities have taken credit for what they said was a bombing of a Russian “arms depot” Monday night, July 11. Multiple videos of a massive explosion in the Kherson region began to spread online, with the Advisor to the Head of Kherson administration Serhii Khlan confirming that the Ukrainian Army hit the Russian ammunition warehouse in Nova Kakhovka.
The Russians said the attack only hit a fertilizer facility in a civilian area, but what angered them more is the fact that the weapon used by the Ukrainians is the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) supplied by the United States.
An official from the U.S. Department of Defense recently confirmed that a security package was approved last week that included four additional HIMARS – bringing the total to 12.
The HIMARS, manufactured by defense giant Lockheed Martin, is designed to shoot a variety of missiles from a mobile five-ton truck. U.S. troops is training Ukrainian forces on how to use the weapon somewhere just outside the country. The official said it takes about a week to complete the training. Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhaylo Podolyak also confirmed the attack using the HIMARS multiple rocket launcher.
Meanwhile, Russian occupation officials said homes and warehouses were hit by the bombing, leaving seven dead and up to 80 injured. Footage of the aftermath showed locals cleaning up what looks like a civilian area.
Ekaterina Gubareva, who serves as deputy head of the newly occupied Kherson region for separatist forces, said the Ukrainians bombed “peaceful cities with American weapons.”
In a recording that showed the damage done by the bombing, Gubareva said there was a large amount of destruction to urban infrastructure. “We see it was the shops, the market, the bus station, the church and a large number of buildings destroyed.”
The huge explosion seen in the videos was said to be “warehouses containing the mineral fertilizer, saltpeter.”
Russian Senator Olga Kovitidi told a local news agency that the blood of the those killed and wounded in the blasts are on the hands of the United States.
After conveying words of sympathy and condolences to the affected families, Kovitidi said the entire responsibility for the missile strike in the Kherson region rests on the U.S. authorities and their criminal accomplices.
“The U.S. and U.K. military terror in Ukraine is geared towards intimidating both Ukraine’s population and the allied forces of Russia and the Donbas republics, who are supporting the local population and Ukrainian soldiers who are refusing to fight,” Kovitidi said. Kovitidi also went off on U.S. President Joe Biden, whom she accused of partially initiating the war in Ukraine to avoid domestic issues he created “because of his incompetence.” Instead of taking urgent measures to save his country’s economy, Kovitidi said Biden allocated billions of dollars for the war with Russia on Ukrainian territory.
