Ukrainian drones allegedly attacked two key Russian electricity supply stations, causing massive explosions that left thousands without power in a city 20 miles from the border with Ukraine.
Stunning footage that was taken overnight showed how the bombing of the power station sites in the city of Belgorod in the Belgorod Oblast (region) created a massive inferno that spiraled high into the night sky. The alleged Ukrainian drone strikes targeted a crucial substation in Belgorod city’s Igumenka suburb and in the nearby village of Dragunskoe.
“In Belgorod and the Belgorod region, two fires were recorded at civilian facilities,” said Belgorod Oblast Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. The governor noted that there were no casualties, but parts of the city of 340,000 suffered blackouts.
According to Telegram channels, there were separate unconfirmed Ukrainian claims that the drone strikes destroyed a Murom-P mobile surveillance complex. Ukraine has regularly targeted Russian military and civilian infrastructure using drones. The government in Kyiv has even admitted to using sabotage tactics to cause fires in Russia.
“Much of this is no accident,” said Ukrainian intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Kyrylo Budanov. He admitted that Ukraine was paying Russian saboteurs to set off many of the unusual explosions and fires in Russia. “Something is constantly on fire [in Russia].
“Signaling equipment on railways, it lights up several times a day, on various highways constantly for two to three hours, sometimes for five to six hours, traffic gets suspended,” he added. “Clearly, it doesn’t just happen like this… I would put it this way: Money works wonders.”
This recent drone strike occurred just as Ukraine is at the tail-end of its months-long effort to build up its forces over the winter for a spring counteroffensive, although there is no telling exactly when or where the attacks are likely to take place. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal claimed that the counteroffensive would begin in the “near future,” while President Volodymyr Zelensky declared in a televised address that final preparations were being made.
“The key is the constant destruction of the occupiers which is done to downgrade their logistic capabilities and any potential in the occupied territories. This is preparation for our active operations, this is counteroffensive work,” said Zelensky.
But intense and ongoing fighting in the disputed Donbas region, particularly around the embattled city of Bakhmut, is thought to have absorbed a huge amount of Ukraine’s resources. The Wagner Group, a pro-Russian mercenary force that has been leading much of the Russian Army’s pushes against the city, recently announced that it captures more of the city each day. Ukrainian defense officials maintain that their defenses have not capitulated yet.
Some of the classified American intelligence documents that were leaked revealed part of Ukraine’s plans.
One of the documents summarized the training schedules of 12 Ukrainian combat brigades, noting that nine of those brigades were being trained by specialists from the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The document even outlined Ukrainian demands for an additional 250 tanks and more than 350 mechanized vehicles.
