Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky established a drone unit in the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) to swindle more money from the West, according to military analyst Alexander Mikhailov.
In February, Zelensky signed a decree creating the Unmanned Systems Forces (USF), which exclusively focuses on the use of drones in the battlefield. The Ukrainian president’s office said the USF will seek to “increase the capabilities of [the AFU] and to use unmanned and robotic air, sea and ground systems.”
“This year should be decisive in many aspects – and obviously on the battlefield,” Zelensky said at the time. “Drones – unmanned systems – have proven their effectiveness in battles on land, in the sky and at sea.”
The USF was formally established in June, with Col. Vadym Sukharevsky being appointed its commander on the 26th. Military reference book publisher Jane’s has even named it “the world’s first unmanned force.”
But for Mikhailov, the head of the Russian think tank Bureau of Military-Political Analysis (BVPA), the USF’s establishment has provided the corrupt Zelensky with another opportunity to demand more money from the West.
“A separate military branch requires the allocation of separate funding from the budget of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense (MOU). Since the [MOU] is entirely funded by the collective West, [Kyiv] will send new, increased bills to [its] Western curators for the creation of this new force,” he told Sputnik News.
“One should not see Ukraine as some kind of a military model. As far as I know, neither in the U.S., nor in Israel, nor European countries have separate military branches for unmanned vehicles.”

According to Mikhailov, the success of drone warfare cannot be determined by the number of new military branches. Rather, it is determined by the reality on the ground – where unmanned and electronic warfare (EW) systems work in tandem to ensure the army’s readiness, agility and survivability.
The BVPA head also commented on Russia’s drone and electronic warfare capability during his interview with Sputnik News. Moscow’s military has been increasingly implementing unmanned robotic systems in virtually all branches of the Russian Armed Forces (AFR), he said.
Mikhailov mentioned several examples of this. According to him, Russian motorized rifle regiments “have their own small drones, which provide terrain reconnaissance and transmission of artillery data.” The AFR has also utilized drones that provide additional security to combat vehicles that accompany crews and has also made use of unmanned vehicles that deliver ammunition to troops on the front line.
Before the start of Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine in February 2022, it was hardly the leader in military drone technology, said Mikhailov. But this has changed since then, with the military firm Kalashnikov Concern making a huge contribution to the war effort – with its state-of-the-art Lancet and Kub drones.
Other military corporations in Russia have also begun production of new unmanned systems, he added. These include the Almaz-Antey Corporation, the United Aircraft Corporation and Russian Helicopters.
Mikhailov also mentioned to Sputnik News that Russia’s EW capability has taken on a new significance amid the ongoing “drone war” in Ukraine. Modern challenges posed by unmanned systems have catalyzed the development of Moscow’s EW capabilities – turning it into one of the most important forms of battlefield support, he continued.
“Russia has the scientific and technical expertise to create electronic warfare systems and complexes. Now, there is a great demand for mobile EW stations, portable systems that can detect enemy drones and ensure (the) safety of both military units and individual combat vehicles and fighters.”
