Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has suspended his 2024 presidential campaign and endorsed former President Donald Trump.
Kennedy filed on Aug. 23, to officially have his name withdrawn from the ballot in key swing states, including Pennsylvania and Arizona. In a press conference, Kennedy told reporters that he will throw his support to President Trump. His name will remain on the ballot in other states, however.
During the same press conference, the independent presidential candidate also admitted that he has been offered a role in a potential second Trump administration. In explaining his decision to keep his name on the ballot in most other states where he has gained ballot access, he noted that it is for his supporters who can feel comfortable that their vote for him won’t be spoiled.
“Many months ago, I promised the American people I’d withdraw from the race if I became a spoiler,” said Kennedy. “If you live in a blue state, you can vote for me without harming or helping President Trump or Vice President [Kamala] Harris, and [in] red states the same will apply.”
“But in about 10 battleground states where my presence would be a spoiler, I’m going to remove my name,” he added.
In explaining his decision to withdraw, Kennedy said internal polls indicated that his continued presence in the race would hurt Trump and boost Harris’ campaign. He added free speech, the conflict in Ukraine and “a war on our children” as among the other reasons for him to withdraw from swing states.
“These are the principal causes that persuaded me to leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent, and now to throw my support to President Trump,” said Kennedy at a Trump rally in Phoenix, Arizona, where he joined the former president in front of a cheering crowd.
Kennedy believes he could win the election under an “honest” electoral system.
“Now, in an honest system, I believe that I would have won the election,” he said. “In a system that … my father and my uncles thrived in, a system with open debates, with fair primaries … and with a truly independent media untainted by government propaganda and censorship, in a system of nonpartisan courts and election boards, everything would be different.”
“After all, the polls consistently showed me beating each of the other candidates, both in favorability and also in head-to-head matchups,” he continued. “But I’m sorry to say that while democracy may still be alive in the grassroots, it has become little more than a slogan for our political institutions, for our media and for our government and – most sadly of all for me – for the Democratic Party.”
